Wallaga Lake is a place of deep cultural significance to the Yuin-Monaro people (specifically the Djiringanj people) on the NSW South Coast. While “Wallaga” itself is derived from Aboriginal language, the lake is profoundly known as the home of Umbarra, the black duck, which is the totem of the revered elder King Merriman, an original inhabitant of Wallaga Lake. Umbarra, also known as Merriman Island, lies within the lake and can be seen as the shape of a duck from Gulaga. The black duck is the Yuin people’s tribal totem.
